Alan Bruce is CEO and Director of Universal Learning Systems – with offices in Ireland, Barcelona, Helsinki, Sao Paulo and Chicago. A Graduate Faculty researcher in the University of Memphis, Dr. Bruce is also a Board member of the U.S. National Council on Rehabilitation Education. Vice-President of EDEN (European Distance and E-Learning Network) from 2010-15, he is an EDEN Senior Fellow. Associate Professor with UOC (Open University of Catalonia), Barcelona on conflict resolution. In 2016 he became Visiting Professor for Global Learning in Changhua University of Education, Taiwan.

The move towards openness has challenges for established structures and assumptions about teaching, learning, understanding and knowing. These challenges center on educational access, pedagogical neutrality, quality and capacity building. Personal and social development are interlinked in a matrix of contradictions around educational systems, financing, power and learner autonomy. We relate these to wider socio-economic environments, roles and transformative goals.
